The Magic Cord
A thought for my beloved wife and shared among all those who have spent decades growing in intimate companionship.
There is a Magic Cord between us, invisible, yet as real as the unseen air we breathe. One end is anchored in the depths of your heart, ensnared around the tender-most parts. The other end is attached just as securely to mine, braided into a true lover’s knot, entwined and tight woven, impossible to undo.
As the heartbeats of life pass by, the end knots of this Magic Cord pull ever more snug, digging into the deep and caring parts of our souls. With each passing moment, ever more the Cord embeds itself.
The woven threads of this Magic Cord make a line so infinitely strong that neither time nor distance reveals a weakness. No matter how far apart, the Cord faithfully passes the tug of one heart through to the other.
And this constant heart-tug that passes through the Magic Cord is like a healthful exercise for the soul, increasing our ability to care, to love, and to long for. As if we were leaning into a constant and gentle breeze, our hearts have grown to expect and enjoy the tension of the Cord’s gentle pulling.
If somehow the Magic Cord were ever severed, would the wound be fatal? Would the sudden release of that gentle tug be more than a lonely heart could stand?
No, for our God has woven this Magic Cord from strands of love, and even in death a Magic Cord cannot be broken. If I should leave this world before you, or if the first departure should be yours, the Cord will remain strong between this place and the next. Across the eternal distance the heart-tugs will still be felt, pulling and wooing until once again both our hearts will be together.
And even there, I hopefully suppose, the love-knot will still be impossible to undo.
