A Search for Security

In columnist Paul Rahe's recent article titled A New Birth of Freedom, the author speaks of a great danger we bring on ourselves:

The larger danger... has never been that we Americans would succumb to socialism as a consequence of a coup d’état of the sort being attempted by Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and their acolytes. The larger danger has always been what Tocqueville feared: that the citizens of liberal democratic republics would gradually and unobtrusively come to depend on centralized administration for help in every aspect of their lives. Our propensity to drift in the direction of obliviously surrendering our liberties one by one in search of a security that no government can really guarantee has always been where the greatest peril lay.

He puts this in the context of America's current state of affairs, however the underlying problem is universal.  Everyone in every country throughout history have struggled with this same desire for security.

Although the theme is throughout all of the Bible, in just one book, the Psalms, we can read enough to highlight our situation.  The leaders of our secular governments assure us of security and prosperity, even though they know they are powerless to fulfill those promises.  The Psalmist responds, "I have hated them that regard lying vanities: but I trust in the LORD."  (Psalms 31:6)

In this statement he states both the problem and the solution.  The institutions of Man will always fail to provide all we need, and those who promise to do so lead us into tyranny.  We can rightfully be angry with those who so purposefully deceive and manipulate.

But the Psalmist offers the solution: Trust in the Lord.

There is a God who created us and deep inside each of us is that desire to be in communion with Him.  Because inside Man is the knowledge that only God can provide what we need.

  • The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. (Psalms 18:2)

  • Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.  (Psalms 20:7)

  • The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. (Psa 34:22)

Many people want to turn elsewhere for their security, because they live their lives contrary to the ways of God.  Instead of trusting in Him, they turn to anything that can promise prosperity and safety.  They delude themselves into believing lies, even though they know they are being deceived.  The Fascists, Nazis, Communists, and Moaists of our last century are examples of societies who willingly believed the lies of their leaders.

The question remains whether America will follow in the path of these failed societies.  A Libertarian rejection of big government or Tea Party trend to self-reliance can be just as deceiving.  A personal turning back to God is the only way to ensure security, because "none of them that trust in him shall be desolate."
